Intern Spotlight – Katherine Crater

Meet Katherine Crater, a graduate of our Summer 2019 Program! She is currently attending Montgomery College and majoring in graphic design. Her interests include Marvel, video editing, and animals. This summer Katherine interned at the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN) where she proved to be an excellent graphic designer. Katherine did such a wonderful job that ASAN has asked her to continue working for them on a project basis, which she is doing while also attending classes.

Looking back on her experience with BroadFutures, as well as her time now working with ASAN, Katherine commented, ” The experience at BroadFutures taught me things that I may not have already known before, or had known but expanded upon. The drama sessions were very entertaining and the trips were fun as well. I also enjoyed getting to know some new people.  I had a really enjoyable time working at ASAN as their graphic designer for their Annual Report. The fact that their theme for the Annual Report this year was a comic aesthetic made it more fun. Right now I’m editing their easy read toolkit icons, as well as making a couple other graphics.

Congratulations, Katherine, on continuing your graphic design work at ASAN and your education!
Employer Spotlight – The Arc of Northern Virginia

This month we would like to shine the spotlight on The Arc of Northern Virginia, a new employer partner who started working with us this past summer. The Arc of Northern Virginia is a local chapter of the largest non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc shares our mission of empowering individuals with disabilities. The Arc’s mission is to promote and protect the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to help support inclusion in the community.

Larry Rockwell, Director of Communications & Community Relations, worked closely with our intern this past summer. Looking back on the experience, Larry had this to say, As an organization that serves individuals with developmental disabilities, we are keenly aware of the skills, talents, and abilities that these young people possess, but are too often overlooked in the workplace. As fierce advocates for expanding opportunities for men and women with a disability to enjoy meaningful employment, we were thrilled to partner with BroadFutures to “walk the walk.”  We identified a set of skills and tasks that were needed, and BroadFutures matched us with a student intern who fit the bill perfectly. But in addition to those job skills, our intern also brought a greater sense of awareness of the needs, even to us. While we hope her job experience with The Arc of Northern Virginia was rewarding, we know that we, as an organization, are richer as a result of her being with us, and of our relationship with BroadFutures.

Thank you for those kind words, Larry! More information about The Arc of Northern Virginia can be found here.

I also really enjoy being able to share ideas and strategies with other mentors and our team. Our Employer Spotlight for the month of September features American Institutes for Research (AIR)! AIR is  one of the world’s largest behavioral and social science research organizations, focused on using the best science available to help make the world a better place. AIR is proudly committed to fully integrating diversity and inclusion in their strategy, operations, and work environment.

This year we have Christian, and he’s working in our IT department, and I must say that he has been getting great reviews. Diversity and inclusion is important, because it shows in the work that we do. You need people from diverse backgrounds who have diverse thoughts. It just makes the work stronger and makes organizations as a whole stronger.”

We love how AIR makes diversity and inclusion a top priority. We are so grateful for our partnership! More information about AIR can be found here.
Intern Spotlight – Brad Veira

This month we are shining the intern spotlight on Brad Veira! Brad recently graduated from Kipp DC and this fall he started at the University of the District of Colombia where he wants to major in mechanical engineering. His favorite class this semester is trigonometry.

He enjoyed his internship and really liked the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of tasks, one of his favorite being using the power washer! Brad reflected on his time with BroadFutures, saying he learned ” how to open up more and be more attentive.”  We enjoyed getting to know you this summer, Brad, and we wish you the best of luck at UDC!

July Newsletter (2019)

Our Summer Program is in Full Swing!

Our Summer 2019 interns are more than halfway through the program, and they are all gaining invaluable professional skills and work experience.  They are working in  a diverse group of industries including policy, international affairs, disability, finance, energy, hotel and tourism, and many more.

Every Friday our interns return to BroadFutures for discussions and activities around areas of success and growth including time management, career exploration, networking, maintaining a growth mindset, self-advocacy, good sleep habits, and more. We continue to integrate drama to reinforce our curriculum as well as yoga and mindfulness to introduce stress tolerance and reduction. Below are some of our interns completing a career skill scan activity.

Fun Events in July!

Boat Cruise on the Potomac
We recently welcomed current interns, alumni and staff for a fun filled, two-hour boat cruise down the Potomac. We enjoyed coming together on a beautiful night to connect, talk about internship experiences, and enjoy the fabulous views of DC from the water!

Games at the Wharf
We were recently hosted by Mark Dorigan, an alumni parent and President of PN Hoffman, one of the Wharf development partners, and his wife Amy Fredenburg, for an alumni event at the Wharf. We played corn hole, bocce, giant Jenga, and enjoyed each other’s company!  Thank you  Mark & Amy !!

Capitol Tour
On July 19th, Senator Chris Van Hollen’s office organized for us a tour of the Capitol. We enjoyed ourselves and learned some very interesting facts – did you know that the statue that sits atop the Capitol dome is called the Statue of Freedom and weighs 15,000 pounds?

Nationals Game
BroadFutures interns, mentors, family and friends all came out for a night of baseball on Friday, July 26th when the Nats played the L.A. Last summer BroadFutures entered into a partnership with The District Wharf, serving 10 young people through our summer internship program.  Our interns worked at District Wharf employersInterContinental Washington D.C. – The Wharf, Concord Hospitality Services, Colonial Parking, Entertainment Cruises, The Southwest Business Improvement District (SWBID), and CBRE.  It was a highly successful partnership for both our participants and for The Wharf employers.  The purpose of the grant is to build off of our past success and to allow for the expansion of our partnership, as well as to provide the necessary support for the types of opportunities we were able to make happen last summer for District youth.

Intern Spotlight-
This month we are shining the spotlight on Jacob Ottinger! Jacob is a 21-year-old young man from Chevy Chase, MD. He is currently enrolled at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA where he is studying political science. Jacob spent the winter as an intern at the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). AAPD is a nonprofit organization that seeks to increase the political and economic power of people with disabilities.

As an intern, Jacob was responsible for many tasks including helping prepare for the AAPD gala, answering phone calls, attending meetings, and assisting with the REV UP Campaign which aims to increase the voter turnout among people with disabilities. His supervisors were so impressed with his positive attitude and hard work that he was offered an extended internship that will last through the summer. Congratulations, Jacob! And a big thank you to AAPD for being such a welcoming and inspired employer partner.
Reflecting on his internship experience, Jacob said,“The program’s strength is in its support and help for people with disabilities. It really does feel like an environment where someone can share openly and honestly about their struggles. The community aspect of BroadFutures is one that should be continued to be pushed and promoted.”
Good luck with the rest of your internship, Jacob!

March Newsletter (2019)

Winter 2019 Program is Well Underway!

Our Winter 2019 interns are just over halfway through the program, and they are all doing tremendously in their internships and are making steady progress towards building their professional skills. They have all been presented with incredible opportunities including developing and presenting their own research, helping out with annual galas, leading staff meetings, collaborating and training with different departments, and much, much more.

Our interns have also been developing professionally through our Friday trainings, where we have been engaging in dynamic conversations about stamina and attention in the workplace, email etiquette, networking, self-advocating, feedback, and the importance of maintaining a growth mindset, among other topics.

Employer Spotlight- APSE

APSE, the Association of People Supporting Employment First, is the only national, non-profit membership organization dedicated to Employment First, a vision that all people with disabilities have a right to competitive employment in an inclusive workforce. APSE was founded in 1988 with a mission to advance employment equity for people with disabilities.

APSE is a new employer partner, presently hosting two of our interns. We are thrilled with our new partnership with APSE! Our interns are being provided  with incredible opportunities to engage in policy advocacy for people with disabilities and to capitalize on their college degrees in information technology and graphic design.

APSE, having a mission and vision very closely aligned with BroadFutures’, appreciates the value that our interns have brought to their office. When asked about their experience thus far, Executive Director Jenny Stonemeier had this to say: “We are so thrilled to have Sam and Christian join the APSE team. Their enthusiasm and eagerness for working with us has been evident from the moment we met them; and the support that they get from the BroadFutures team is invaluable. We consider ourselves lucky to be a part of such a comprehensive and strengths-based approach to support young people in gaining professional experience.”

Thank you for the kind words, Jenny! We look forward to an ongoing and successful partnership with you! Find out more about APSE here.

Intern Spotlight- Christian Souvenir

Christian (left) pictured with supervisor.
This month we are shining the spotlight on Christian Souvenir, an intern in our current program. Christian is a recent graduate of Lawrence Technological University in Michigan, where he received his Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. He is currently interning at APSE, our Employer Feature for the month.

While interning at APSE, Christian has had a variety of responsibilities for the team. Most of his work has involved working on the website’s maintenance by testing its accessibility and updating the content. In addition, Christian created graphic handouts on disability policy issues for meetings with Congressional offices and has been scheduling those meetings for the Director of Policy and Advocacy.
Reflecting on his time so far with BroadFutures, Christian shared: “BroadFutures has been helping me improve my verbal communication and social interactions, as well as preparing me for the workforce.”

We are looking forward to seeing Christian’s continued progress during the remainder of his internship with APSE!!
