Introducing our 10th Cohort of Interns!

We started our year off strong with another group of interns! We are thrilled to introduce our new class of inspired and talented interns-the BroadFutures Winter 2019 Program participants.

After completing their initial two weeks of training earlier this month, our interns are hard at work at their respective internship sites. They have already completed three weeks of internships with much success and we are thrilled with how motivated, engaged, and open to feedback the interns have been so far as they navigate the workplace and implement new strategies to help them grow professionally and unlock their full potential!
Launching our NEW WEBSITE!!

We have been hard at work with our wonderful partners and web designers, Michael Marshall Design, overhauling our website.

We are thrilled with the result and we invite everyone to visit us and check it out HEREMichael Marshall Design is an award-winning, multicultural, multidimensional architectural design firm located in Washington, D.C. They are passionate about advancing communities and social causes, and about encouraging global perspectives with a belief that diverse backgrounds inspire broader thinking. Michael Marshall Design has been a stalwart supporter of the BroadFutures mission to promote the hiring of persons with disabilities, serving as an employer partner and supporting our organization.

Intern Spotlight- Ethan Rogers

This month we are shining the spotlight on Ethan Rogers, an intern from the Summer 2016 Program. He also joined BroadFutures for ongoing mentoring as he began his transition process after completing his undergraduate studies in 2018. Ethan is a recent graduate of St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts. He is currently taking physics classes at George Mason University and plans to pursue graduate school in the next few years.

While in the BroadFutures program, Ethan interned at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Some of his responsibilities included researching and presenting on topics related to economics and writing daily news briefings. Ethan found much success throughout his internship as he was able to utilize strategies to improve upon his communication and self-advocacy skills.
Reflecting on his time with BroadFutures, Ethan shared: “BroadFutures helped me to start working in a professional environment. I learned a lot from them about teamwork and about advocating for oneself among professionals.”
We are so glad to see Ethan’s progress so far, and we are looking forward to seeing what he does next!

Employer Spotlight- Concord Hospitality

Concord Hospitality Enterprises is a hotel management and development company that was founded in 1985 with the goal to create an exceptional hospitality experience for hotel patrons. Concord Hospitality has over 100 hotels throughout the US and Canada, including the Hyatt House and Canopy by Hilton located at The District Wharf.

Concord Hospitality became an employer partner in the Summer 2018 Program as part of our partnership with The District Wharf. We are thrilled to have continued our partnership this winter, as interns placed at their hotels have been able to build their professional communication skills in a supportive and engaging environment.

Concord appreciates BroadFutures’ high level of communication. Chelsea Elosegui, Dual Coordinator of Human Resources, noted that our “communication was always clear and set,” and that BroadFutures was “communicative about the interns, their progress, events, tips, etc…” We are deeply grateful for our partnership with Concord Hospitality, and look forward to an ongoing and successful partnership. 7 past and devoted employers…

Intern Spotlight- Stephen Anderson

Stephen Anderson first joined BroadFutures as an intern in Winter 2018, and he is joining us again this winter as an alumni intern! He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Architecture. Having decided to pursue a career outside of his major, Stephen began looking to gain new experiences in the professional world to explore his interests and expand upon his skills. His internship last winter was in the office of Congressman John Delaney of Maryland, where he answered calls from and created case files for constituents, provided administrative support, and had a large role in collecting and organizing submissions in a county-wide school art competition. Stephen enjoyed his internship over the winter so much that he continued to work there through this past summer. His new internship this winter is with Enterprise Holdings, Inc. where he is in the management training track.

Stephen had these thoughts to share about his past year: “I’m really thankful that BroadFutures has been able to support me in my continued growth and give me the tools I need to realize success during and after the program. I want to thank Enterprise for being an employer partner and working with me to ensure my continued success.”

Thanks Stephen, and good luck at your internship!

NCLD has served as an employer partner as well, and we are  thrilled to have a continuing partnership.

Program Coordinator Kelly Fomalont had this to say about NCLD’s partnership with BroadFutures:

The National Center for Learning Disabilities is proud to partner with BroadFutures in our joint mission to help young adults with learning disabilities reach their full potential. BroadFutures has made it incredibly easy to utilize our interns to move this mission forward. Our interns get real workplace experience with support from the BroadFutures team, while learning about the laws that impact them directly. We are excited to be working with BroadFutures to inspire future advocates for the learning disabilities movement.”

Thanks so much, Kelly!!

BroadFutures intern, Griffin, and his supervisor, Kelly

Intern Spotlight – Devynn Johnson

This month, we are excited to shine the spotli ght on Summer 2018 intern Devynn Johnson. Devynn interned at World Learning,  a thriving international nonprofit organization that has worked to create a more  peacefu l, sustainable, and just world for over 85 years.

As an intern at World Learning, Devynn
conducted research, compiled data, completed administrative tasks, and created a final presentation summarizing her research. Devynn is currently finishing her first semester at Delaware State University.

Devynn had this to say about her time as a BroadFuture s intern at World Learning

“BroadFutures… helps and supports youth to become work-ready adults. As a work ready adult, youth learn the work environment that they may or may not like and how to deal with those environments… To be better one must do better, to do better one must know their own faults and BroadFutures not only shows you how to be better but also how to do better based on strengths instead of weaknesses.”

Thanks for sharing these thoughts, Devynn, and good luck with your next semester!
 Employer Spotlight –
The U.S. Small Business Administration

This month, we are featuring our employer partner The U.S. Small Business Administration (“SBA”) The SBA makes the American dream of busi n ess ownership a reality. Intern, Daniel and Supervisor, Eric

Nina Levine, Deputy General Counsel of the SBA, had these thoughts to share when reflecting on partnering with BroadFutures:

“The U.S. Small Business Administration is pleased that it was able to partner with BroadFutures to host an intern in its Office of General Counsel. The internship was an opportunity for a young adult to experience work in a fast-paced government legal office, including interacting with friendly, dedicated government employees while working on an assortment of interesting issues. SBA benefited from the intern’s contribution and from the behind-the-scenes support of BroadFutures in making the internship a success.”

A Great Success!!!

Thank you to our incredible community for helping to make the BroadFutures 5th Anniversary Changing Lives Fall Gala a huge success! The Gala was  held on November 17th at the French Embassy, and we were thrilled that everyone had such a good time. We are grateful to our sponsors, donors, guests, and of course our amazing alumni interns, both for our successful evening and for everyone’s support to further our mission!

We presented our Champion Award to our two honorees: The AES Corporation, a valued employer partner, and LeDerick Horne, whose personal story of disability and spoken word poetry left us all inspired and in awe. We surpassed our fundraising goal and increased our support by 20% from 2018. We were also able to raise an additional $25,320.92 at the Gala to support scholarships for our 2019 programs to ensure that BroadFutures is able to serve a diverse group of young people and expand our programs. Thank you to everyone for making the evening an incredible success!!!

 Staff Spotlight – Laurie Thomas

This month we are shining the spotlight on our Director of Program Support, Laurie Thomas, who has been with us for 8 out of our 9 programs. Laurie’s expertise and extensive knowledge of the challenges of executive dysfunction have been instrumental to the success of our program. As an active and engaged member of the ADHD education and treatment community, Laurie has an in-depth knowledge of ADHD and the varying and accompanying challenges those with ADHD experience.  Laurie provides support and guidance to both our interns and employers, ensuring mutually successful outcomes. Her support and strategies are tailored to each individual intern and employer, allowing for overall effective and positive partnerships.

Reflecting on her time at BroadFutures, Laurie had these thoughts to share:

It is always incredibly gratifying to meet these young people where they are when they enter the program and watch them use strategies, tools and supports to make meaningful progress towards reaching their potential. Witnessing the growth interns make in improving their self-confidence, self advocacy, communication and executive function skills is an enormous privilege for me.”

October Newsletter (2018)

October is…
National Disability
Employment Awareness Month!

BroadFutures is proud to once again celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month  (NDEAM), an annual awareness campaign that takes place each October. NDEAM aims to educate people about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. This year’s theme is “America’s Workforce: Empowering All.”

BroadFutures supports the mission of NDEAM  through our holistic training, mentoring and paid internship program for young people with disabilities. We believe in the inherent and untapped potential of the young people that we serve, and we recognize that inclusion works for everyone.  Last year in an effort to bring awareness to this effort, BroadFutures, in collaboration with several other like-minded organizations and Quoted Studios, developed an educational and fun animated video on unconscious bias and the value of hiring individuals with disabilities. We are excited to share it again this October to help educate and inspire others.

If you’re interested in learning more about NDEAM and its history,  click here.

Reflections from our CEO/President, Carolyn Jeppsen

Change your life today. Don’t gamble on the
future, act now without delay.
 – Simone de Beauvoir

It has been 5 years since we incorporated BroadFutures, founded upon the fervent belief that we needed to act now without delay to change the existing landscape for young people with learning disabilities transitioning to school or work. After 5 years, hundreds of young people served both directly through our internship programs and indirectly through our outreach programs, and partnerships with over 40 employers, we have hopefully changed attitudes, perceptions, expectations, workplaces, hopes, dreams…and lives.

I am so incredibly humbled and inspired by the courage and tenacity that the young people we serve have demonstrated over the past 5 years. We have seen a diverse group of young people commit to changing their own lives, to act NOW and without delay, and in so doing, they have reaped the wonderful benefits of change, progress and success. I am equally humbled and inspired by the passion and dedication that our employer partners have shown in hosting our interns, and in opening to the possibilities of what a diverse workforce in the 21st century looks like and of the promise of the young people we serve. I am also every day humbled and inspired by our staff and all the specialists we work with towards our shared commitment and vision of a future where diverse learners can thrive. Finally, I am incredibly grateful to the many supporters in our village who have donated their time, money, heart, and soul to BroadFutures. Without all for you, we would not be in the position of celebrating what we are today.

While we are incredibly proud of where we are, we want to continue to grow and bring our programs to many, many more young people. We are hopeful that as a community, you will all celebrate with us and be a part of our Changing Lives Gala on November 17th, marking this important time for us as an organization!  We look forward to working together to continue to change lives.
Join us as a Sponsor at our
5th Anniversary Changing Lives Fall Gala!

Intern Spotlight – Danielle Bedney

We are shining the light on another Summer 2018 Program alum this month!

Danielle “Danny” Bedney is from Washington, DC. She graduated from the Seed Public Charter School and is now in her junior year at Hartford University, where she is majoring in film. During the BroadFutures program, Danny interned for the Smithsonian Visitor Center, better known as “The Castle.” Danny’s supervisor entrusted her to reinvent the brochure for the museum, which was no small feat. All summer, Danny worked tirelessly on producing a product with visual appeal, fascinating stories, and comprehensive information by touring the museum, collecting survey responses from docents and volunteers, and perusing the archives. Her dedication to this project was admired by her supervisor, and her final presentation to staff members about the design and information for the brochure was impressive after only one summer working there. This past summer, Danny was able to capitalize on her creative skills and ability to self-advocate to ensure that she was as successful as possible. These skills will help her work towards success in school and in her career, as she hopes to be a documentary filmmaker one day.

Danny appreciated feeling like a part of a community here at BroadFutures and learning more about herself:

“One thing I liked the most about BroadFutures was that I got the opportunity to see incredible young adults just like me. It made me feel like I wasn’t alone with my disability. Over the summer I learned that I was capable of setting a goal and completing it when I’m given the right tools to succeed.”

Thanks, Danny. We wish you the best of luck as you continue on your journey!!
 Employer Spotlight – PunkinFutz

We are thrilled to have one of our newest employer partners, PunkinFutz, spotlighted this month. PunkinFutz designs and manufactures therapeutic play products for children with a broad range of physical, sensory, developmental, and emotional needs. They aim to create products that are original and accessible to children with varying needs, to support child-led imaginative play, to design and produce the products in integrated and supported work  environments, and to conduct their business
in an environmentally and socially responsible way. PunkinFutz joined as a new employer partner this past summer and hosted two interns to work on social media and research-based projects.

Chief Marketing Officer Whitney Hunter-Thompson, who supervised the two BroadFutures interns this summer, understands the value proposition in partnering with us and had this to say about her time with the interns: ‘

“We were so delighted to work with BroadFutures and in so doing, support their important mission. Our interns were incredible! BroadFutures’ time spent training the interns, supporting their professional development and improvement, and acting as additional advocates allowed us to utilize the full extent possible of our interns’ skills and capabilities. As any employer knows, a vast majority of time can be spent on the general skills of an employee/intern that take away from the technical tasks at hand. BroadFutures absolutely solves for that. We look forward to a continued partnership with them in the future, but in the meantime, we encourage anyone and everyone who needs interns to use BroadFutures!”

Thank you for these kind words, Whitney! We are excited to continue our partnership with PunkinFutz as they work to provide new options to celebrate and strengthen our diverse community.

 Intern Spotlight: Max Peterson

This month we are shining the spotlight on one of our Winter 2018 interns – Max Peterson. Max attended Moorpark Community College in California as a History major and worked in the restaurant business before joining BroadFutures. During our program, he interned with the Office of Senator Chris Van Hollen. As an intern in a congressional office, Max supported many aspects of the daily operations of the Senator’s office including creating  case files, answering constituent phone calls, and performing other administrative support. During his internship, Max was able to meet the Senator as well as work in the Capitol Hill Office.

Max’s employer admired his work ethic, positive attitude, attention to detail, and deeper understanding of his responsibilities. The internship equipped Max with the needed skills to continue on his professional growth trajectory and expand his future career options. He will be returning  to community college in the fall.  Max is a strong supporter of the BroadFutures holistic approach and felt that our program benefitted him both personally and professionally.  When reflecting on his experience, Max said:  “BroadFutures has made me more confident in what I do.”
Employer Spotlight: World Learning
BroadFutures Intern, Devynn Johnson (R), with World Learning’s Chris Iverson
This was our second program partnering with  World  Lear ning. They first joined as an employer partner this winter, and we were excited to collaborate again with this incredible organization and its amazing team during the summer. World Learning is an international non-profit  organization dedicated to promoting a more peaceful an d just world for over 85 years. Grounded in five key approaches, including experiential learning, leadership development, inclusive practices, innovation, and grants management, World Learning’s mission is to help young p eople find their voices, connect with their communities, and strengthen the insti tutions which aid their emergence as world leaders.

World Learning enthusiastically embraces our mission, and in reflecting on our partnership and the impact BroadFutures interns have had on their organization, Senior Youth Workforce Specialist Catherine Honeyman had these words to share:

We have particularly learned from how BroadFutures prepares employers to receive interns by showcasing their strengths and areas where they may need additional support, and from how BroadFutures offers its interns ongoing mentorship and training support.

In their projects with us, BroadFutures interns have supported us to gather data on the Pakistani labor market to know which types of skill training programs we should emphasize in our project, organize participant feedback from training programs in Latin America, organize the research and references we draw upon in designing high-quality programming, and analyze where we might expand our services.

Thanks to our past interns, Devynn and Sophie, and to the whole BroadFutures team!”

Thank you to Catherine Honeyman and the incredible team at World Learning. We look forward to an ongoing and successful partnership!!

 Intern Spotlight: Sophie Sperduto

Sophie Sperduto is an 19-year-old from Washington, D.C., where she attended  The Lab School of D.C. Sophie is serving as an Alumni Intern this summer, after completing our winter Program. During her time in our  Winter Program, she interned at World Learning, where she was responsible for administrative support for their busy season. Her employer was thrilled to have Sophie on their team, and praised her determination, honesty, and cheerfulness.

Currently, Sophie is interning at Entertainment Cruises, as part of our partnership with the D.C. Wharf. She is working as both a restaurant hostess and administrative intern. What Sophie enjoys most about working at Entertainment Cruises is “having a hands on job and working with different people.”  This August, Sophie will be matriculating to Catholic University, where she intends to study Psychology and Criminology.

When reflecting on her time at BroadFutures, Sophie had these words to share: “The experiences BroadFutures has given me has allowed me to learn a lot about myself regarding the workforce.”

Thanks, Sophie and good luck with the remainder of your internship!
NEW Employer Spotlight: SWBID
BroadFutures Intern, Stuart Landis with SWBID’s COO, Andre Witt and Delante Chloe

This month we are excited to introduce Southwest Business Improvement District, or “SWBID,” as one of our newest dedicated employer partners! SWBID is a Business Improvement District compiled of inspired leaders who plan, fund, and implement projects and supplementary services in their local community. SWBID is committed to beautifying and connecting the communities of SouthWest, DC, as well as redefining the status quo for the  state of public infrastructure throughout Southwest, D.C.

This is our first summer partnering with SWBID and we are excited about the partnership. SWBID welcomed one of our Alumni Interns to join their team this summer, where he has since been responsible for assisting SWBID in establishing projects that bring excitement, beautification, creativity, cleanliness, and pride to the District. The internship has been so successful, that our Alumni Intern has often referred to his co-workers and supervisors as, “one big happy family,” and has found himself growing more as a young professional than he had anticipated. We feel extremely fortunate to partner with SWBID this summer and look forward to the future success of our growing partnership.

When reflecting on the partnering with BroadFutures, SWBID, Chief Operating Officer, Andre Witt had this to say….. “It has been a joy beyond belief working with Stuart, and he has become such a big part of our (SWBID) family. We simply love having him here with us.”

Thanks so much SWBID! We look forward to continue to partner with you and help keep DC beautiful and safe!!!

BroadFutures’ GYA Accreditation!!
We are very excited to announce that after 9 months of hard work, we have been accredited by the Gap Year Association!!! Our accreditation will allow us to collaborate with other Gap Year Programs, to expand our program nationally, and to serve a broader range of students. The Gap Year Association has been wonderful to work with and provided the following statement regarding our accreditation:

The Gap Year Association, GYA (formerly the American Gap Association, AGA), was founded in 2012 as a non-profit organization setting standards for organizations within the gap year industry and working to grow the gap year movement around the country and the globe. We are thrilled to announce BroadFutures as our newest accredited member. To become an accredited member with GYA, BroadFutures went through a rigorous process providing evidence to uphold the GYA standards. The GYA accreditation standards include categories such as safety and risk management, educational curriculum, service learning, staff training, inclusion and access, experiential learning, etc. In addition to providing standards, GYA conducts research, hosts an annual conference, and provides a space for the gap year community to communicate and learn from one another.”
